Lout is a document formatting system designed and implemented by Jeffrey Kingston at the Basser Department of Computer Science, University of Sydney, Australia. Lout offers an unprecedented range of advanced features, including optimal paragraph breaking, automatic hyphenation, PostScript EPS file inclusion and generation, equation formatting, tables, diagrams, rotation and scaling, sorted indexes, bibliographic databases, running headers and odd-even pages, automatic cross referencing, multilingual documents including hyphenation (most European languages are supported, including Russian), formatting of C/C++ programs, and much more, all ready to use. Furthermore, Lout is easily extended with definitions which are very much easier to write than troff or TeX macros because Lout is a high-level functional language, the outcome of an eight-year research project that went back to the beginning to start with a clean slate. Lout-users is a public mailing list that has been set up for discussion of the Lout document formatting system. Using Lout-users
To post a message to all the list members, send email to lout-users@lists.planix.com. You can subscribe to the list, or change your existing subscription, in the sections below.
Subscribing to Lout-users
Subscribe to Lout-users by filling out the following form. You will be sent email requesting confirmation, to prevent others from gratuitously subscribing you. This is a hidden list, which means that the list of members is available only to the list administrator. Your email address:   Your name (optional):   You may enter a privacy password below. This provides only mild security, but should prevent others from messing with your subscription. Do not use a valuable password as it will occasionally be emailed back to you in cleartext. If you choose not to enter a password, one will be automatically generated for you, and it will be sent to you once you've confirmed your subscription. You can always request a mail-back of your password when you edit your personal options. Once a month, your password will be emailed to you as a reminder.
